The portrait has long been a way of denying mortality, of leaving a lasting image, evidence of an individual existence. The artists in this exhibit portray themselves and others, transforming the stasis of still photography and painting into movement. In doing so, resurrection occurs to differing degrees. Animation literally signifies life, or at least the suspension of death. Those portrayed in these works are caught in dreams and nightmares, playing the specter and apparition, confronting and seducing, drifting in anonymity or evoking recognition. An absence of specific place or time is prevalent throughout, a condition that heightens the presence of persona or personae. They move and we are moved.
